Thanks in part to you, first-ever girls’ washroomopens at Mamiloki Primary School in Kenya

The first-ever girls’ washroom/bathroom at Mamiloki Primary School in Kenya was dedicated and officially opened March 10. It was funded in large part by generous donations from Immanuel members to the Kenyan Children’s Fund.

“For many years, the school had a washroom for boys, but not for girls. That put girls at a disadvantage and, in some cases, kept them from going to school or staying in school for the entire day,” says Jimmi Kimuyu, an Immanuel member and one of the founders of the Kenyan Children’s Fund (KCF). “With the new washroom, which will serve female students for generations to come, that inequity now is a thing of the past.”

Jimmi, who currently is in Mamiloki, supervised construction of the girls’ washroom and was there to celebrate its opening with the students and community.

Since 2012, Immanuel donors have been leading contributors to the Kenyan Children’s Fund. It provides poverty-stricken children and their guardians in the Mamiloki/Masii area of Kenya with monthly food supplements, crop seeds to enable people to grow their own food, assistance with school tuition and uniforms, goats to provide milk and much-needed income for needy families, a home-repair and construction program through which local people repair crumbling abodes or build their first and only shelters, pallets to keep people from sleeping on dirt floors, vaccinations and other health-care services that are crucial in an area ravaged by HIV/AIDS, and a Kenyan social worker who ensures that contributions meet urgent needs and who reports regularly to the KCF committee at Immanuel.

During 2017, donations to the KCF Water for Life program paid for construction of the region’s first well, which now provides drinkable water to the parched region.

“Like the Water for Life program, constructing the girls’ washroom was a special project that was possible only because of your generosity,” Jimmi says. “The community and the students of Mamiloki Primary School send their gratitude and pray that Almighty God will richly bless you.”

A March 10 dedication and ribbon-cutting marked the official opening of the girls’ washroom at Mamiloki Primary School.
A sign outside the girls’ washroom expresses gratitude to Immanuel and the Kenyan Children’s Fund.

Updated Report on the Water Project

Background information on community:

The Mamiloki Village project was projected to serve the community and Primary School with a total population of 9,500 people. The project was expanded on a disaster response project installed in the community by Water Mission Kenya (WMK) in April of 2017.

Prior to the disaster response installation, the community did not have a clean water source. They depended on water from shallow wells located near the newly drilled borehole, water pans, and seasonal streams that were highly turbid and contaminated. The shallow well is fed by a stream which dries up in the dry season. The other water source for the community is a solar-powered system and borehole dug by the IRC which is 6 km away from the community and thus too far from the people.

Since the community had a dire need for clean water, a small-scale project was installed as disaster response in April 2017. A new borehole was drilled by WMK with a total depth of 200 m and dynamic water level of 54 m. An 11SQF-2 was installed in the borehole at 82 m, and is powered by six 250 W solar panels. A Potable Water Chlorinator, 10,000 L water storage tank, and one tap stand were also installed as part of the disaster response project in April 2017.

The disaster response project was upgraded in October 2017 to a community managed project serving the school, market and community with an average population of 2,580 people.

Testimonials before project installation:

  • “I usually use a casual laborer to fetch for us water and ferry using a donkey from a shallow well which is about ½ Km away, the donkey has to ferry it twice because we need 200 litres daily as a family”. – Alice Mutheu Kimuyu (Farmer/ retired teacher)
  • “It takes 2 hours just looking for water, this affects my daily household chores and farming”. – Alice Mutheu (Farmer)

Engineering solution (disaster response):

  • Water Source: A borehole that was drilled by WMK. The borehole is 200 m deep with a dynamic water level of 54 m and yield of 14 m3/hr. Two 11SQF-2 submersible pumps were installed in the borehole. The pump is powered by six additional 250 W solar panels which are mounted on a second standalone solar rack near the water source.
  • One additional 10,000 L storage tank, elevated on a 2 m tank pad, was installed at Mamiloki Primary School. Water level is controlled with a float switch installed in the tank and a CU200 installed at the solar rack.

Water Points: Four additional tap stands were installed through the community.

Living Water:

  • Pastors training on discipleship and evangelism, Christian Missions, leadership, pastoral self-care and biblical interpretation among others were conducted. On the impact of our training on the ministry, the pastors reported on how the training helped to galvanize their pastoral ministry. They observed that they have been able to work together to carry out door to door evangelism. This according to them was a powerful thing since it showed that these pastors are united in their vision to reaching out with the gospel.
  • They also observed that their gained skills on discipleship and Bible study have been helpful especially as they were facilitating a week-long teenagers’ conference. At this conference some gave their lives to Jesus Christ. The same skills will be of use for them as they shall be facilitating future a women conference.
  • The pastors therefore continue to reach out and work together in synergy and requested for a possible follow up training so that even those who did not attend last time could possibly benefit from it. They reported that the hand-out passed over to them during the training provided help since they could refer back to it. They continue to request for some literature (e.g. Bible commentaries) so that they might use for their sermon preparation and bible study programs.

Commissioning date: Oct 30th, 2017

Served with Safe Water: 2,580

Testimonials after commissioning:

  • “My neighbors and I are happy because we are assured of clean, safe water even when it’s the dry season. We save time and we have planted vegetables which we sell to our neighbors. Our children get to school on time and they can do their homework without interruptions. We also have enough water for our animals to drink” – Frida Ndungwa (Mother)
  • “Life has been made easy because the water is near my house and always available. We have planted vegetables at school which we can sell and even supplement our diet. Our children have water at school which saves them school time hence they get enough time to study” -Mr. Wellington Kingi (Head teacher)

Other notable successes

  • Access to water by community members with ease
  • Improved household income due to reduced water related diseases
  • Improved nutrition as community members are now able to utilize surplus water to plant kitchen gardens
  • Improved household hygiene and sanitation because of community wide WASH trainings.

Challenges:

  • High iron and manganese levels were detected and continues to be a challenge. This is causing the water to be colored and not attractive to some people. An additional treatment system is needed to remove the iron and manganese.
  • Low water sales during the rainy season because most people are using rain water collection. Rains have been experienced in the entire reporting period i.e. March-May.
  • The community prefers using rain water for cooking and drinking while the project water is used for other uses because of the water quality issues.
  • Some community members still must walk for long distance to access water and given that the borehole yield is sufficient, an extension would be helpful to them.
  • Delay by the community to finalize trenching to one of the tap locations. This delayed work and lead to increased implementation cost because of delaying project completion schedule.

Kenyan Children’s Fund: Please help a needy child

Through the Kenyan Children’s Fund, a project founded by Immanuel members, members of our congregation and others provide food, medical care and some education support for more than 40 poverty-stricken children in the Mamiloki village of Kenya.

Several children who are in dire need currently have no support. To sponsor one or more of those children for only $390/year or to get more information about sponsorship, contact John Helgesen, jhelgesen@mycci.net or 913-381-2997.

If you already sponsor a child, go to https://kenyanchildrensfund.org/reports-about-sponsored-children/ to read reports that a Mamiloki village pastor/social worker submits about the children’s wellbeing.  Look for your name next to your sponsored child’s name.

Per the KCF team’s request, each brief report emphasizes the child’s health, educational progress and living situation (homes listed as having “no improvement” would be considered uninhabitable in the U.S.). The reports also indicate whether goats,  — paid for by additional sponsor donations — which provide milk and whose offspring be sold for additional income.

Finally, the reports mention crops that, thanks to the upcoming completing of KCF’s Water for Life project, now may receive enough water to keep them from withering. Thanks in large part to your generosity, KCF raised $92,000 to drill a clean-water well and Water Missions (WM) , a faith-based engineering and education team that is our project partner, now is installing the tap system. WM experts will stay in Mamiloki for a year or more to training native people to maintain and/or repair the system and to help them establish what we might call a rural water cooperative.

Thank you for your generosity to children in need.

Water for Life: Together, we did it!

There were times when raising $92,000 for a clean-water well and tap system to bring potable water to 7,000 parched people of Kenya’s Mamiloki village area seemed a nearly impossible dream.

But you saw the opportunity to save lives and protect children, and you said yes. Yes to reaching out to people you don’t know and likely never will meet. Yes to a project that will bring life-saving benefit to God’s children halfway around the globe. Yes to Christ’s call to “Love one another as I have loved you.”

Together, we did it!
Thanks to generous donations from congregations and individuals, we have reached the $92,000 Water for Life goal!

As the fund-raising portion of the Water for Life project ends, the Kenyan Children’s Fund/Water for Life team now is working with Water Missions (WM) — the organization that drilled the well, is installing the tap system and will train the Mamiloki village people to maintain and repair it — to tie up loose ends, and monitor WM’s year-long training program and its work to help the native people establish what we might refer to as a rural water cooperative. The Water for Life team also is reviewing needs for a repair reserve fund for the water system.

Heartfelt thanks to all of you who have donated so generously in the past. The people of Kenya’s Mamiloki village area lift up prayers of thanks for you every day.

Gratefully,
The Kenyan Children’s Fund/Water for Life team

Reports reveal needs of KCF-sponsored children

Water_1KCF sponsors support the health and wellbeing of children whose lives would otherwise be destitute and, perhaps, quite short. Sponsor donations provide food, medical care and some education support. Previous donations also paid for goats, which provide milk and whose offspring can be sold for crucial income.

A pastor/social worker in Masii periodically visits the sponsored children and submits reports about their wellbeing. Per the KCF team’s request, each brief report emphasizes the child’s health, educational progress and living situation (homes listed as having “no improvement” would be considered uninhabitable in the U.S.). The reports also mention crops, which are now withering, and indicate whether the goats are well kept, which had been a challenge.

If you are a sponsor, click here (https://kenyanchildrensfund.org/reports-about-sponsored-children/) and look for your name next to the report about your sponsored child. Six children still need sponsors. To sponsor a child for only $390/year or to get more information about sponsorship, contact John, jhelgesen@mycci.net or 913-381-2997.

Thank you for your generosity!
